Wow, so much planning to be done before I embark on my first trip to Alaska. I have a great team here so I do nto fear leaving the office at all for a few days. I take off from AGS Monday morning and arrive at 11:30 Alaska time or 4:30am Gerogia time. I have an Alaska set clock in my office. Looks like I will arrive in Anchorage right as the sun is setting. Wacky!
The days get closer and I have so much to do. I have been watching the weather in Anchorage to be sure I have the right clothes with me. I will be in the Alaska Magazine office most, but I hope to get out and see the last frontier as well. Weather from the AlaskaMagazine.com new web site reported today from NOAA, "620 AM ADT THU AUG 2 2007 Today... Cloudy with scattered showers. Highs in the 60s. Variable winds to 15 mph. Southeasterly gusts to 30 mph along turnagain arm and the higher elevations." Looks like I better bring my coat. Coat? In August? How funny. Better to be safe than sorry right?
The new AlaskaMagazine.com web site is really starting to take shape. Lots of neat features. I like the weather features the best. Another neat feature is the Travel Planning link which takes you to a very nice, searchable business directory. Wow, that was a ton of work. AJ on my team really put some hours into that project.
Please keep in mind that my most recent memories of Alaska are from the show Deadliest Catch. Watch out, I can almost carry on a conversation about commercial crab fishing. Lol.
So, why am I going to Anchorage you may ask? Frankly, I am a little confused, about all the Alaska hype? Thus, my trip. Everyone that has been to Alaska has a story. (or ten) Everyone but me! I hate to be the only one without a story. Andy Hall, Publisher of Alaska Magazine, has said many times that I need to come to Alaska to see understand the passion people have for the state. We'll Andy, get ready, this Yankee turned Southern Boy is on his way really soon.
I have just confirmed my plans to make my first trip to Anchorage, Alaska. I am traveling for business to meet with my friends and colleagues at Alaska Magazine. I will be leaving from Augusta, GA in mid August and will fly from AGS to ATL to SEA to ANC. I leave at 11 am and will arrive at 11pm. Yikes! My hope is to blog my trip and share with you all.
ChatAlaska.com was started not as a travel site, but as a place where people with a passion for Alaska can share. I hope to have my own story to tell very soon. Keep checking back for more.
Ryan
p.s. How far is Anchorage form Dutch Harbor? Day trip perhaps? I was hoping to get a picture of the commercial fishing ship the Northwestern. Just kidding. I can read a map.
This project is a bit of an experiment by our group. We truly felt that people with a passion for Alaska would want to share their stories, photos and more about their life in Alaska or their trips to Alaska. In addition, we felt that people wanting to move or travel to Alaska could find help from people that truly know the state. Please tell a friend and enjoy!! We are looking for Alaska experts to help with this site. Send me an e-mail ryan.dohrn@morris.com if you want to volunteer. We are looking for experts in Alaska politics, Alaska Real Estate, Alaska Travel, Alaska Events and Alaska life.
