Capturing Alaska (and Costa Rica!)
with Wayde Carroll
I finally have been able to get a few more Costa Rica images ready from my trip at the end of May. In this blog I've selected my favorite people images.
Costa Rica is very similar to Alaska in that the weather can be constantly changing. One moment you can have glaring sunshine, the next you're weathering a furious downpour. For me, this is perfect because it gives a photographer a wide range of lighting situations. With every change of light I would look around anew to see what looks good NOW!
Having some nice overcast makes for nice portraits outdoors so you'll see a lot of that here. Also, Costa Rica has a lot of open air restaurants etc. and even when it's sunny outside you can get some great diffused light creeping in through the sides of the building. I was constantly grabbing my camera as we sat down to eat. It seemed there were great portrait ops everywhere.
There are also some images using fill flash, especially for those people wearing hats in the sun. For the image of the topiary artist from Zarcero-see the guy with the cutting shears- I used the trusty off-camera flash through the umbrella technique.
The more I photograph people on trips the more comfortable it becomes. Not only will I ask for permission to photograph someone but now I have no problem with "directing" them if I feel I can get a better photo. Rarely to people refuse to be photographed.
So here are the photos! I'll post some favorite scenes soon as well.

Awesome photos Wayde!
